How can I find out what operating system and how much RAM (memory) my computer has? PDF Print E-mail

IBM Compatible (Personal Computer or PC):

  • Click on your Start button.
  • Choose Settings, and then Control Panel.
  • In the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon.
  • If the General tab is not selected, click on it. Your computer's Operating System and RAM (Random Access Memory) will be shown in this window.

Macintosh:

  • Click on your Apple menu and choose About this Macintosh. The number indicated as "Available Built in Memory" is your RAM, given in Kilobytes (K) or Megabytes (MB). Your operating system number is shown in a format such as "Mac OS 8.6".

Note: A Megabyte (MB) equals 1,024 Kilobytes (K). To convert K to MB, use these examples as a guide:

  • 8,192 K is approximately 8 MB
  • 16,384 K is approximately 16 MB
